Overview
The Imperial Sovereign of Earth is one of the Four Sovereigns, presiding over mountains and rivers, yin-yang generation and the transformation of all beings, in a Heaven-and-Earth pairing with the August Heaven. Houtu predates the mature Daoist pantheon and long occupied the intersection of state sacrifice, Daoist ritual and popular religion. The archive therefore includes Houtu in the core Daoist pantheon while retaining a 'shared tradition' label rather than reducing this historical formation to a product of a single religious school.
