Overview
The Taoist College (Singapore) was approved for establishment by the Registrar of Societies in January 2008, and is Singapore's first formal institution of Daoist education, organized by the Sam Chin Taoist Cultural Centre with the support of the Taoist Federation (Singapore); it is housed in the administrative building of the Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple. The college was established in the same year as the Sam Chin Taoist Library, and regularly invites scholars from mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore itself to teach short courses covering Daoist philosophy, the nourishing of life, the history and legends of deities, and the study of Daoist literature and scriptures, and also trains ritual chanters and temple administrators. Its establishment marks Singapore Daoism's effort to shift from a devotional, incense-offering form of religion toward one grounded in knowledge and doctrine. It should be distinguished from the 'Taoist Mission (Singapore)' — a separate organization approved by the Registrar of Societies on February 16, 1996 — the two bodies having no affiliation with each other.
