Life
Liu Zhongyu is a professor and doctoral supervisor in the Department of Philosophy at East China Normal University, and a leading scholar of Daoist studies in Shanghai. His research focuses on Daoist talismans and registers, Daoist ritual and magical practice, and Daoist culture. His works include Daoist Ritual Magic (Daojiao fashu, 2002), A Study of the Daoist System of Register Conferral (2014), A Perspective on Chinese Daoist Culture, The Inner Esoteric World of Daoism, and Studies in Zhengyi Daoism, among others. He is especially known for his systematic research on Zhengyi talismans and registers, the register-conferral system, and Daoist ritual magic, and has worked closely with the Shanghai Daoist community (such as Chen Liansheng), taking part in compiling Shanghai Daoist ritual liturgy and the Great Dictionary of Daoism.
