Life

Fu Jinquan, sobriquet Jiyizi, was a native of Jinxi, Jiangxi, and an internal-alchemy master of the Jiaqing and Daoguang eras of the Qing; his dates of birth and death are unknown, and he was active for a long period in Sichuan. He compiled and printed the seventeen-part Zhengdao mishu (Secret Books for Verifying the Dao, around 1830), including the Lüzu wupian zhu (Commentary on Patriarch Lü's Five Chapters), the Chishui yin (Chant of the Red Water), the Xinxue (Study of the Mind), the Beixi lu (Records of the Cup Stream), and the Daohai jinliang (Ford across the Sea of the Dao), among others. He advocated the dual cultivation of nature and life while also drawing on theories of yin-yang dual cultivation involving a partner, and is regarded as a disseminator of dual-cultivation alchemical methods in Sichuan during the Qing. Fu Jinquan's thought combined elements of Longmen and Jingming, and he placed great emphasis on devotion to Patriarch Lü and the exhortation to virtue; the alchemical scriptures he compiled and printed circulated widely in Sichuan and Jiangxi, and he is an important figure for the study of Qing-dynasty alchemy in Sichuan and the prehistory of Li Xiyue's Western Lineage. His writings were reprinted in the Republican era by continuators of the Daozang jiyao and by alchemical periodicals, and modern scholars of internal alchemy continue to debate the authenticity and school affiliation of his works.
