Synopsis
The Encyclopedia of Taoism is the most comprehensive Daoist encyclopedia in the English-speaking world, chief-edited by the Italian-born scholar Fabrizio Pregadio with contributions from nearly two hundred experts internationally, published by Routledge in 2008 in two volumes. It contains more than 800 entries, covering figures, scriptures, sects, deities, temples, terminology, methods of cultivation, ritual, art, and regional transmission, each with a bibliography; the opening volume includes a systematic general introduction organized around such themes as 'the Dao and cosmology,' 'gods and immortals,' 'lineages and traditions,' 'texts,' 'practices,' 'rituals,' and 'sacred sites,' and the work concludes with a glossary of Chinese terms, a bibliography, and indexes. Its editorial standards are rigorous, with entries mostly written by leading authorities in their fields (such as Robinet, Kohn, Bokenkamp, Kleeman, Lagerwey, Schipper, and Verellen), and it can serve both as a reference tool and as a guide for research. It is complementary to the Daoism Handbook (edited by Kohn, 2000): the former excels in the breadth of its entry coverage, the latter in the depth of its thematic surveys, and the two works together serve as the standard introductory and reference works for English-language Daoist studies.
