Synopsis
There are two principal works sharing the title Daojiao Dacidian (Great Dictionary of Daoism). The first was edited by Li Shuhuan and published by the Chuliu Book Company in Taipei in 1979; it contains several thousand entries covering immortals, scriptures, schools, temples, terminology, ritual methods, and festivals, and was an early comprehensive Daoist dictionary in Taiwan, long in common use among Chinese readers. The second was compiled jointly by the Chinese Taoist Association and the Suzhou Taoist Association and published by Huaxia Publishing House in 1994, with contributions from both clergy and scholars; its entries focus on doctrine, ritual, temples, and contemporary Daoist organizations, combining the perspective of religious practice with scholarly standards. The two works differ in format and emphasis and are best used together. The appearance of dictionaries of this kind marked the beginning, in the late twentieth century, of the systematization and standardization of Daoist knowledge in the form of modern reference works; the subsequent Zhonghua Daojiao Dacidian (Great Dictionary of Chinese Daoism), edited by Hu Fuchen (1995), went further in scale and scholarly depth, while the Daojiao Wenhua Cidian (Dictionary of Daoist Culture), edited by Zhang Zhizhe (1994), focused on cultural aspects; together these works constitute the basic landscape of Chinese-language Daoist dictionaries.
