Synopsis
The Daojiao Wenhua Cidian (Dictionary of Daoist Culture) was edited by Zhang Zhizhe and published by Jiangsu Ancient Books Publishing House in 1994; it is a Daoist dictionary that focuses on cultural aspects. Unlike specialized dictionaries weighted toward doctrine and scripture, this work pays particular attention to the interaction between Daoism and Chinese literature, art, music, opera, painting, architecture, folk customs, festivals, food, medicine, and technology; its entries — such as paintings on the theme of the Eight Immortals, Daoist musical tune-titles, temple architectural forms, Daoism in literati poetry, and Daoist elements in folk festivals — provide convenient reference for researchers in cultural and art history. It also includes basic entries on Daoist history, schools, figures, and scriptures, so that it can serve as a general reference. Several Daoist dictionaries were published in China in the 1990s (the Daojiao Dacidian, the Zhonghua Daojiao Dacidian, the Daojiao Wenhua Cidian, the Zhongguo Daojiao Dacidian, and others), each with its own emphasis, reflecting the expansion of Daoist studies at the time from religious history into cultural history; this work is representative of those oriented toward cultural studies and the general reader.
