Overview

Yuquan Temple stands at the mouth of the valley on the northern foot of Mount Hua, the starting point for ascending the mountain, and the principal temple of the Huashan Lineage of Quanzhen Daoism. Tradition holds that the eminent priest Chen Tuan withdrew here in the Five Dynasties and early Song; his practice of sleep cultivation, internal alchemy, and the teaching of the Diagram of the Limitless (Wuji tu) are all associated with the Mount Hua transmission. During the Huangyou era of the Northern Song, his disciple Jia Desheng built a shrine to him here, which was expanded over successive eras and rebuilt during the Tongzhi era of the Qing. The temple holds a reclining statue of Chen Tuan, the Xiyi Shrine, Wuyou Pavilion, and Shansun Pavilion; its water is channeled from springs in the mountain, hence the name "Jade Spring." The temple preserves stone carvings of the characters "Fortune" (fu) and "Longevity" (shou) in Chen Tuan's own hand, along with a stele bearing the Complete Map of Mount Hua. It was restored and reopened after 1982 and is an important temple under the Shaanxi Taoist Association.
