Overview

Daoism in western Hubei centers mainly on the City God temples and Xuanmiao Temple of the Yichang and Jingzhou area (the Xuanmiao Temple in Jingzhou is a Ming-dynasty structure, designated a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level in 2006) and on folk Daoist ritual traditions in the Three Gorges region. The Xuanmiao Temple in Jingzhou was founded during the Dade era of the Yuan, with the Hall of the Three Pure Ones and the Xuanwu Pavilion rebuilt in the Ming, making it an important Daoist temple of the Jing-Chu region. There are remains of a Daoist temple near Sanyou Cave in Yichang. This entry serves as an appendix on Daoism in western Hubei, with its main entry being the Xuanmiao Temple in Jingzhou.
