Overview

The ninth of the Thirty-six Lesser Grotto-Heavens, titled the “Heaven of Cinnabar Mountain and Crimson Water,” governed by the Perfected Diao Daolin. Today it is Mount Siming in Ningbo, Zhejiang, a place where Daoists have practised since the Jin. The Biographies of Divine Immortals records that Liu Gang, magistrate of Shangyu, and his wife Lady Fan (placed by one tradition in Eastern Wu of the Three Kingdoms, by another in the Jin) once entered this mountain to contend in magical arts, and later ascended as immortals at Shangyu; the mountain holds such scenic sites as Cinnabar Mountain and Crimson Water, the Four-Window Cliff and the Baishui Palace.
