Overview
Juexiu Temple, popularly known as the Dalongdong Immortal Lord's Temple, is dedicated mainly to Sovereign Lord Fuyou, together with Lord Guan (Guan Shengdijun), Yue Fei (Prince Wumu), Perfected Longen, and Perfected Siming, jointly called the 'Five Benefactor Sovereigns'; it belongs to the spirit-writing shrine (luantang) tradition of northern Taiwan, having received a division of incense from Xingzhong Tang in Tamsui, with its lineage traceable further back to Xinmin Tang in Yilan and Huanxing Tang in Toucheng. The 'Society for the Joy of Goodness' was founded in 1902, relocated and renamed Taipei Juexiu Tang in 1914, and renamed Juexiu Temple after renovation in 1917. This temple holds a pivotal position in the institutional history of Daoism in Taiwan: in 1949 the Chen Yueji family donated three hundred ping of land for its renovation, and the 63rd-generation Celestial Master Zhang Enpu resided here for intensive cultivation, establishing here both the 'Taiwan Liaison Office of the Mansion of the Celestial Masters' and the Taiwan Provincial Taoist Association, making Juexiu Temple the landmark birthplace of institutionalized Daoism in postwar Taiwan. The temple's present form was completed in 1988, standing about twenty-five meters tall in a three-story, double-eaved Northern palace style; its door guardian figures, carved from single blocks of cypress wood, are rare among traditional temples in Taipei. This temple and Zhinan Temple both venerate Lüzu but belong to different lineages: Zhinan Temple's lineage derives from a division of incense from Yongle Palace in Shanxi, while Juexiu Temple belongs to the spirit-writing shrine lineage running from Yilan to Tamsui.
