Overview

The Taiqing Palace in Shenyang is the birthplace and ancestral court of the Longmen Lineage of Quanzhen in Northeast China. In the second year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing (1663), the eighth-generation Longmen priest Guo Shouzhen came from Tiecha Mountain in Benxi to Shengjing (Shenyang) at the invitation of the Shengjing general Ukuri, who was seeking rain, and built the Sanjiao Hall (Hall of the Three Teachings) there; in the thirty-second year of Qianlong (1767) it was expanded and renamed Taiqing Palace. His disciples, including Liu Tailin, went on to found temples at Mount Qian, Mount Yiwulü and elsewhere, laying the foundation of the Daoist landscape of Northeast China. The palace consists of four courtyards facing south, with a mountain gate, Hall of Divine Officer Wang Lingguan, Hall of Guandi, Hall of Laojun, Hall of the Jade Emperor, Hall of the Three Officials, Tower of Patriarch Lü, Tower of Patriarch Qiu (Qiu Chuji), and the Stupa of Patriarch Guo (Guo Shouzhen), representing Qing-dynasty official-style Daoist temple architecture in the Northeast. It was designated a National Key Daoist Temple in 1983 and today houses the Liaoning Provincial Taoist Association.
