Overview

The Ching Chung Taoist Association of America is a North American branch of Ching Chung Koon in Hong Kong (a Quanzhen Longmen Daoist temple founded in 1950 by Hou Baoyuan and others who relocated from Zhibaotai, Guangzhou, to Hong Kong), registered in California in 1978. The association centers on the worship of Patriarch Lü Chunyang and continues the Quanzhen Longmen ritual lineage, making it one of the few Daoist institutions in North America with a clear order-based transmission rather than being a community folk temple. Beyond incense offerings and scripture recitation, its daily functions are particularly known for providing Daoist priests to officiate funeral rites for the Chinese community in the Bay Area — this "funerary ritual" function is the principal means of livelihood and proselytizing for overseas Zhengyi and Quanzhen Daoist priests within immigrant society. The premises are open year-round and also hold lectures on Daoist culture. It should be noted that its organizational relationship with the parent temple in Hong Kong is one of religious lineage and nominal transmission, while the two are administratively independent of each other.
