Overview

The Daoist Association of Russia (Даосская Ассоциация России) was founded in 2021 by Li Jia and Cheng Bohan, and is the principal Daoist organization in the Russian-speaking world, belonging to the Europe Taoist Federation network. The association translates Daoist scriptures into Russian, teaches doctrine, and practices cultivation. Russia's contact with Daoism has a fairly long history: sinologists of the Russian Orthodox Ecclesiastical Mission in Beijing had already begun translating and studying Daoist texts in the nineteenth century, and Soviet sinology in the twentieth century likewise conducted systematic study of the Daodejing and the Zhuangzi, but organized religious practice did not begin until the twenty-first century. The same network also includes the Belarusian Daoist Association (Белорусская даосистская ассоциация, founded by Zhou Jinlong) established in 2023, and the Austrian and Liechtenstein Daoist Association established in 2024, reflecting the continued expansion of Daoism into eastern and central Europe.
