Overview
Duqiao Mountain, also known as Nanshan, has Danxia landform terrain and is listed in Daoist texts as the twentieth of the Thirty-six Lesser Grotto-Heavens, the "Baoxuan Grotto-Heaven"; it is a renowned Daoist grotto-heaven in the Lingnan region. Temples were built and cultivation practiced on the mountain from the Tang and Song onward; tradition holds that in the Song dynasty a woman named Liu, styled Immortal Aunt Liu, attained immortality through cultivation there. Scenic spots on the mountain such as Qingshou Rock, Baoyuan Cave, Taiji Rock and Yungai Peak are all named for their Daoist associations, and the Ming-dynasty traveler Xu Xiake once journeyed here. From the Qing dynasty onward, Buddhism and Daoism intermingled on the mountain, and today Daoist temples and Buddhist monasteries coexist there; it is a scenic area of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
