Overview

Jui Tui Shrine is the most important Chinese temple in Phuket Town, dedicated chiefly to the Nine Emperor Gods and Doumu. The opening ceremony of the Nine Emperor Gods Vegetarian Festival each year, together with the raising of the "Go Teng" pole (a ceremonial flagpole for inviting the descent of the Nine Emperors), is held here, making the shrine the hub of the festival across all of Phuket. The shrine was once damaged by fire and subsequently relocated a short distance to its present site. Together with Kathu Shrine (the birthplace of the festival) and Bang Neow Shrine, it is known as one of Phuket's three great Doumu shrines; during the festival the three shrines jointly hold processions and rites of fire-walking and of sending the Nine Emperors back on their return journey, drawing Chinese participants from Malaysia and Singapore. Sources differ on the founding date; this entry follows the account of 1911, noting that it remains uncertain.
