Overview
The Maoshan Daoist Culture Museum, located within the Maoshan Scenic Area in Jiangsu, is a dedicated exhibition institution devoted to the Shangqing school and the Daoism of Maoshan. Maoshan is the ancestral seat of the Shangqing (Maoshan) school; since Yang Xi and Xu Mi received revelation of the Shangqing Scriptures there in the Eastern Jin, successive patriarchs — Tao Hongjing, Wang Yuanzhi, Pan Shizheng, Sima Chengzhen and Li Hanguang among them — made it the academic and political center of Tang-dynasty Daoism, its traditions of visualization, scripture chanting and health cultivation exerting a profound influence on Daoist doctrine as a whole. The museum draws on the ritual centers of Jiuxiao Wanfu Palace, Yuanfu Wanning Palace and Qianyuan Temple, displaying material on the historical development of Maoshan Daoism, its scriptures, ritual implements, seals and stele rubbings, among which the "Four Treasures" transmitted at Maoshan — a jade seal, jade tablet, agate inkstone and jade talisman — are the mountain's sacred protective objects. No clear public record has been found of the museum's opening year, exact address or coordinates; these should be verified on site or with the managing authority. See the separate entries for the parent ritual centers, "Mount Mao (Maoshan)", "Jiuxiao Wanfu Palace" and "Yuanfu Wanning Palace."
