Overview
Shangqing Palace in Luoyang is located on Cuiyun Peak of Mount Mang; tradition holds that Laozi once refined the elixir there. In the reign of Emperor Gaozong of Tang, a Temple of the Emperor of Mysterious Origin was built to venerate Laozi, and under Emperor Xuanzong of Tang it was renamed Shangqing Palace, becoming one of the important temples dedicated to Laozi in the two Tang capitals, paired with Taiqing Palace in Chang'an. It was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt after the Song, restored in the fourteenth year of the Jiajing reign of the Ming (1535), and the surviving Cuiyun Cave and Laojun Hall date from the Qing and from reconstruction after the 1990s. Records also mention Tang-dynasty murals by Wu Daozi in the Temple of the Emperor of Mysterious Origin within the city of Luoyang, though these no longer survive. Shangqing Palace is an important venue for the Luoyang Taoist Association.
