Overview

The area of the Longmen Mountains in Pengzhou was one of the core regions of early Celestial Master Daoism. Of the Twenty-four Parishes established by Zhang Daoling, the "Yangping Parish" was foremost among them, located at what is now Yangping Mountain in Xinxing township, Pengzhou; the Celestial Masters tradition has since used the "Seal of the Overseer of Merit of Yangping Parish" (阳平治都功印) as the seal of transmission of the faith, a practice that originates here — the Yangping Temple stands on the site today. At Mount Danjing (known for its peonies), tradition holds that Ge Hong's cousin Ge Yonggui cultivated the Dao, and the mountain preserves relics such as Mount Gexian and Laojun Cave. Daoism has a long history in Pengzhou: temples proliferated from the Tang and Song onward, most were destroyed from the Yuan and Ming onward, and the Yangping Temple, Mount Gexian, and other sites have been progressively restored since the 1980s. The Longmen Mountains were also among the areas hardest hit by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, and a number of Daoist temples have been rebuilt since.
