Overview
The Xuandi Temple stands on Xuantian Ridge in Jilin City. Built in the third year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing (1738), it enshrines the Great Emperor Zhenwu (Xuantian Shangdi) and is popularly known as the Zhenwu Temple or the Xuantian Ridge Zhenwu Temple; it is one of the oldest Daoist temples in Jilin province. In the Qing dynasty, Jilin City was a major stronghold in the Northeast and the temple flourished with worshippers, but it declined after the Republican era; it was rebuilt in the 1980s, restoring the Sanqing Hall, Zhenwu Hall, Hall of Divine Officer Wang Lingguan, and others. It is today the seat of both the Jilin Provincial Taoist Association and the Jilin City Taoist Association, and is the province's principal Quanzhen temple.
