Overview

Nam Thean Tong is one of the earliest limestone-cave temples developed in Ipoh; according to the temple's own history it was built in 1867, developed by a Daoist priest, and also known as "Nam Tou Yun" (South Daoist Cloister, in Cantonese pronunciation). This temple is one of the few in Malaysia to clearly enshrine Laozi (the Celestial Worthy of the Way and its Virtue) as principal deity, with Patriarch Lü, Guanyin, Guandi, the Jade Emperor and local deities worshipped alongside him; its halls are set against the limestone cliff face and cave, rising level upon level, with stalactites and man-made shrines interspersed within the cave, evoking rather strongly the spatial imagery of the Daoist grotto-heavens and blessed lands — the use of natural caves as sacred space is a transplantation of the Daoist tradition of site selection into the Nanyang region. Among the limestone hills of Ipoh's Kinta Valley there are several other cave temples, including Sam Poh Tong, Perak Tong and Ling Sen Tong, but most of these are Buddhist (Sam Poh Tong and Perak Tong are Buddhist temples); Nam Thean Tong is the one among them whose religious character is closest to Daoism. Some of the temple's halls have fallen into disrepair with age, and have been gradually restored by devotees in recent years.
