Overview

The Hong Kong Taoist Association was founded in June 1961, and serves as the overarching coordinating body for the Daoist community in Hong Kong, spanning the Quanzhen, Xiantian Dao, Zhengyi, and other traditions, with member Daoist halls numbering over a hundred. Some English-language sources give 1957 as the founding year; this actually refers to an unsuccessful motion that year by seven Daoist halls to organize a "Hong Kong and Kowloon General Taoist Association," and 1961 should properly be taken as the founding date. Since 2013 the Association has designated the second Sunday of March each year as "Taoism Day," and it also holds a triennial Grand Dharma Assembly for Praying for World Peace and the Resolution of Karmic Obstructions during the Lower Prime, as well as a Great Offering to All Heavens (Luotian Dajiao) held roughly once a decade. It runs five secondary schools, five primary schools, and six kindergartens under its aegis, with over 14,000 students in total, including the First to Third Secondary Schools of the Yuen Yuen Institute, the Tang Hin Memorial Secondary School, and the Ching Chung Secondary School. The Association is a member of the Colloquium of Hong Kong's Six Religious Leaders and is also one of the six designated bodies representing the religious subsector on Hong Kong's Election Committee, giving Daoism a voice in public affairs.
