Overview
The Xianren Cave is located on a cliff on the eastern hill of Guiyang. Tradition holds that Zhang Sanfeng practiced cultivation in the cave during the Ming dynasty, and a Sanfeng Shrine was accordingly built there; during the Qianlong reign of the Qing, priests expanded it into a full Daoist temple, with a Sanqing Hall, Sanfeng Hall, Yuhuang Pavilion and other structures built against the cliff face. The temple was damaged during the Cultural Revolution and restored in the 1980s; it is now the seat of the Guizhou Provincial Taoist Association and the principal Quanzhen temple in Guiyang. Daoism was introduced into Guizhou during the Ming and Qing along with migrants and garrison troops, and is distinguished by the veneration of Zhenwu and Zhang Sanfeng, of which this entry is representative.
