Overview
Chunyang Temple stands at Shuzhu Hill in Haizhu District, Guangzhou, founded in the fourth year of the Daoguang era of the Qing (1824) by the Quanzhen priest and astronomer Li Mingche. Li Mingche had taken part in drawing the maps for the Guangdong Provincial Gazetteer, and he built the Chaodou Platform (Star-Observing Platform) within the temple, a surviving example of Qing-dynasty popular astronomical observation — so Chunyang Temple carries the dual significance of a Daoist temple and an observatory. The temple has a mountain gate, Lingguan Hall, Chunyang Hall, Chaodou Platform, and Baidou Altar, dedicated to Lü Dongbin; around the temple are Qing-dynasty and Republican-era cliff inscriptions, and ancient trees tower over the hill. It was restored and reopened in the 1980s and is an important Quanzhen temple in Guangzhou and a Guangdong Provincial Cultural Heritage Site.
