Overview

Jiuxian Temple stands on Yushan within the city of Fuzhou; tradition holds that the nine He brothers of the Han dynasty practiced alchemy here and became immortals, giving the mountain its name, Jiuxian Shan (Nine Immortals Mountain), and the temple is dedicated to the Nine Immortals. The temple was built in the Song and repeatedly rebuilt in the Ming and Qing; it preserves Ming-dynasty structures such as Tianjun Hall and Jiuxian Hall, along with Song- and Ming-dynasty steles, and Yushan itself holds the Qi Gong Shrine and over a hundred cliff inscriptions (including an inscription by Cai Xiang of the Song). Jiuxian Temple is the seat of the Fuzhou Taoist Association and the principal site of Daoist activity in the city of Fuzhou; historically, Fuzhou Daoism has run the folk ritual traditions such as the Lüshan Ritual Tradition alongside Zhengyi Daoism, and Jiuxian Temple is an important node in this history.
