Overview

The Sociedade Taoísta do Brasil was established on 15 January 1991, founded by the Taipei-born Daoist priest Wu Jyh Cherng (1958–2004), and belongs to the Zhengyi lineage (Ordem Ortodoxa Unitária / Dzen Yi) — the only Daoist organization in Latin America formally recognized by, and in contact with, the Chinese Taoist Association. Its headquarters and first temple, the Templo da Transparência Sublime (Temple of Sublime Transparency), are located in Cosme Velho, Rio de Janeiro, and opened in 1991; a second temple in São Paulo was completed in March 2002. Wu Jyh Cherng traveled to Brazil to teach the Dao, translating and annotating Daoist scriptures such as the Daodejing and the Qingjing Jing into Portuguese and lecturing publicly on them, giving Daoism a systematic doctrinal presence in the Portuguese-speaking world, and Rio de Janeiro thereby became the main base for Daoism's spread across the states of Brazil. After Wu Jyh Cherng's death in Rio on 10 September 2004, the organization has continued to the present day. Note: the headquarters is in Rio de Janeiro, not São Paulo.
