Overview
Hok Tek Bio stands at the head of Jalan Suryakencana in Bogor, and is the core temple of Bogor's Chinese quarter. It is dedicated principally to Fude Zhengshen (Hok Tek Tjeng Sin), with subsidiary worship of Guanyin, Mazu, and Guandi. Its founding date is given variously as 1672 or the mid-eighteenth century, neither supported by independent documentation. Bogor (formerly Buitenzorg) was the site of the Dutch colonial governor-general's summer residence; the Chinese there were largely engaged in the produce trade and commerce, and Jalan Suryakencana remains Bogor's Chinatown to this day. During the Suharto era the temple was re-registered as a Buddhist vihara under the legal name Vihara Dhanagun; after 2000 the Chinese temple name was restored for concurrent use. Each year at the Lantern Festival the Cap Go Meh street parade (the Bogor Street Festival) is held, in which the procession blends Chinese dragon and lion dances with traditional Sundanese performances — a well-known example of interethnic coexistence in Indonesia.
