Overview
Baodu Fortress is a noted mountain on the western outskirts of Shijiazhuang, its summit broad and level; tradition holds it to be the site of Han Xin, Marquis of Huaiyin's, celebrated tactic of 'fighting with one's back to the river,' and also the site where Zhang Sanfeng is said to have cultivated the Dao. In the Ming a Sanfeng Shrine and the Jinque Palace were built on the mountain, dedicated to Zhenwu and Zhang Sanfeng. The Shifang Yuan at the foot of the mountain was founded during the Shunzhi reign of the Qing as a public monastery (shifang conglin) of the Quanzhen order, and the Hebei Provincial Taoist Association was once based there. Baodu Fortress was developed as a scenic area in the 1990s, with the Jinque Palace and the Southern Heavenly Gate restored. This entry serves as an appendix to Daoism in Hebei.
