Life
Yuan Miaozong was a Daoist priest active at the court of Emperor Huizong of the Northern Song, known for compiling the ten-fascicle Secret Essentials of the Assembled Perfected for Aiding the State and Saving the People (Taishang zhuguo jiumin zongzhen miyao). According to its own preface, the work was completed around the fifth year of the Zhenghe era (1115) and presented to the court; it is the earliest and most systematically organized surviving compendium of Tianxin Zhengfa ritual methods, gathering together the rites of the Three Luminaries' Correct Method, the expulsion of demons and healing of illness, the summoning and interrogation of spirits, memorials and talismanic mandates, and the exorcism of plague, with detailed records of talisman forms, dipper-pacing steps, inner incantations and visualization methods. It stresses that the practitioner must take "rectifying the mind and being sincere in intent" and "accumulating merit through good works" as the foundation, holding that the efficacy of ritual method depends on the practitioner's inner cultivation rather than on the talismans and spells themselves. The work is a primary source for the study of the institutionalization of talismanic ritual Daoism in the Northern Song and of the development of the Tianxin Zhengfa tradition after Rao Dongtian and Tan Zixiao, and it anticipates large Yuan-dynasty ritual compendia such as the Corpus of Daoist Ritual (Daofa huiyuan). Nothing can be established of Yuan Miaozong's native place, teachers or dates of birth and death; only from his own preface and the lineage described in the text can it be inferred that he was active during Huizong's reign and closely connected to the Tianxin tradition.

- The ritual forms it records became an important source for Yuan- and Ming-dynasty ritual compendia such as the Corpus of Daoist Ritual
