Terry Kleeman, an American sinologist and professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, is a specialist in the early Way of the Celestial Masters. His book A God's Own Tale: The Book of Transformations of Wenchang (1994) translates and studies the Zitong Dijun huashu and the cult of Wenchang; Great Perfection: Religion and Ethnicity in a Chinese Millennial Kingdom (1998) studies the Cheng-Han regime and the Way of the Celestial Masters; and Celestial Masters: History and Ritual in Early Daoist Communities (2016) is the most systematic English-language study of the organization, precepts and rituals of the Way of the Celestial Masters in the Han and Jin periods.
