His representative work in Daoist studies is Daoism during the Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties (1988), which analyzes, from the perspectives of intellectual history and religious studies, the process by which Daoism was transformed from a popular religion into a mature institutional religion during the Wei–Jin and Northern and Southern Dynasties, discussing the thought of Ge Hong, Kou Qianzhi, Lu Xiujing, Tao Hongjing and others, as well as the relationship between Daoism, Xuanxue (Neo-Daoist metaphysics) and Buddhism; it is an important work on the intellectual history of Daoism in this period.
