Life

Tang Kwok-wah (1910–2004) was a Hong Kong businessman, philanthropist and Daoist leader who served for many years as chairman of the Yuen Yuen Institute and chairman (president) of the Hong Kong Taoist Association, and also chaired the Colloquium of Six Religious Leaders of Hong Kong. The Yuen Yuen Institute was founded in 1950 on the principle of the "unity of the Three Teachings," and under his leadership it developed into a large religious organization combining a temple complex with social services such as elder care, education and funeral services, repeatedly funding the restoration of mainland temples and Daoist cultural activities. Together with Hou Baoyuan, Luo Zhiguang and others, he initiated the Hong Kong Taoist Association in 1961, and the Association acquired its premises in 1975; he was a key figure in the unification and institutionalization of Hong Kong's Daoist organizations.
