Life

Mugitani Kunio is a Japanese scholar of Daoism, professor emeritus at the Institute for Research in Humanities, Kyoto University, and president of the Japanese Society of Taoist Studies. He is known for his philological research on Daoist scriptures and Daoist thought, and has compiled several indexes to Daoist texts, including an Index to the Xiang'er Commentary on the Laozi, an Index to the Zhengao, and an Index to Zhou Ziliang's Records of Communications with the Unseen. He directed the research seminar on the Zhengao and, with Yoshikawa Tadao, co-edited Studies on the Zhengao: Translation and Annotation (2000), an authoritative translated and annotated edition of Tao Hongjing's Zhengao. His Studies on Six Dynasties, Sui and Tang Daoist Thought (2018) and other works examine Daoist conceptions of the body, commentaries on the Laozi, and the Scripture of Great Peace. He has long directed the Daoist studies seminar at the Institute for Research in Humanities, Kyoto University, and is a central figure of the Kyoto school of Japanese Daoist studies.
