Life

Lai Chi-tim is a Hong Kong scholar of Daoism, professor in the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and founding director of CUHK's Centre for the Study of Daoist Culture; he is a central figure in Hong Kong Daoist studies. His research covers the Six Dynasties Way of the Celestial Masters, the history of Daoism in Guangdong and Hong Kong, Daoist ritual, and the Daozang Jiyao (Essentials of the Daoist Canon). He has written A Study of Local Daoism in Guangdong: Temples, Priests and Rituals (2007), Understanding Daoism, History and Transmission of Ritual in Hong Kong Daoist Halls (co-authored), and Religious Studies and Hermeneutics, among others; he edits the journal Daoism: Religion, History and Society (from 2009) and Daoist Images, Archaeology and Ritual, and directs the research and database project on the Daozang Jiyao.
