Life
Franciscus Verellen, a German-born French sinologist, is a researcher at the École française d'Extrême-Orient (EFEO), where he served as director from 2004 to 2014, and is a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. A student of Kristofer Schipper, his doctoral dissertation examined Du Guangting, published as Du Guangting: taoïste de cour à la fin de la Chine médiévale (1989), which remains the authoritative study of Du Guangting. Together with Kristofer Schipper he co-edited the three-volume The Taoist Canon (2004), a milestone of Daozang scholarship. His recent book Imperiled Destinies: The Daoist Quest for Deliverance in Medieval China (2019) studies rites of repentance and deliverance from calamity in medieval Daoism. He has long directed the EFEO's Hong Kong Centre, promoting research on Daoism and Chinese local religion. The above is based on publicly available academic information.
