The Maori new year falls in June because June is midwinter in the Southern Hemisphere; they watch the Pleiades because the southern sky has no pole star to watch. This is the answer to "what about the other faiths?" — it is not that the Southern Hemisphere has no fate calculation, but that the Southern Hemisphere has one of its own.
The Celestial Sphere: A Sky Turned Over

And the astronomical skeleton of the Chinese mantic arts rests on exactly these points: the Purple Tenuity Enclosure at the north celestial pole as the heart of heaven; the handle of the Northern Dipper marking off the months; siting a dwelling with its back to the north and its face to the south for sunlight; and the twenty-four solar terms keyed to the seasonal phenomena of the Yellow River valley. This is local knowledge belonging to 30–40 degrees north.
The Dispute: Three Positions Among Chinese-Language Practitioners
"What about the Southern Hemisphere?" is not a new question. Practitioners handle it in roughly three ways, and they disagree sharply.
The switch-the-month-pillar school
AdjustArgument: the months of the two hemispheres stand in exact opposition. The Northern Hemisphere begins the year at the yin month, so the Southern Hemisphere should begin at the shen month; someone born in Sydney in June is read as born in winter, with metal and water flourishing.
Weakness: switching only the month pillar while leaving the year, day and hour pillars alone is internally inconsistent; and since the sexagenary reckoning of months is astronomically defined, shifting it by hand has no basis.
The no-switch school

The solar terms are defined by the sun's ecliptic longitude, so every point on earth is in the same solar term at the same instant; there is no such thing as "Beginning of Spring not being Beginning of Spring in the Southern Hemisphere." The waxing and waning of the five phases is an abstract model of energy, not a literal description of Northern Hemisphere seasons.
Weakness: it sidesteps the level of imagery — the intuition that "spring wood sprouts" does lose its experiential support where the leaves are falling in August.
The middle-way school

Bazi, the solar terms and the Three Cycles and Nine Periods belong to the temporal dimension and are globally uniform; but every part of fengshui that depends on sunlight must be flipped — in the Southern Hemisphere the daylit face points north, so "back north, facing south" should read "back south, facing north" in Sydney. Whether compass qi theory and Flying Star fengshui should flip with it is the sharpest disagreement: some hold that every directional correspondence of the five phases must be adjusted apart from east and west, while others insist the magnetic bearings stay as they are.
This archive leans toward this position: it treats "astronomical time" and "local experience" as separate matters, and the two were never the same thing in the first place.
In passing: what actually throws an overseas chart off is usually not the hemisphere but apparent solar time and the longitude offset. New York and London have to deal with that as well; it has nothing to do with north or south.
