Synopsis

The four-volume Zhongguo Daojiao Sixiang Shi (History of Chinese Daoist Thought), edited by Qing Xitai with Zhan Shichuang as deputy editor, was published by People's Publishing House in 2009, and is another large-scale collectively authored specialized history following the Zhongguo Daojiao Shi. Unlike a general history weighted toward religious organization, institutions, and events, this work specifically traces the internal development of Daoist thought: theories of the Dao and cosmogony, the relationship between nature and life (xingming) and form and spirit, Chongxuan learning and the theory of mind and nature, the Internal Alchemy doctrine of the dual cultivation of nature and life, ethics and the concept of inherited burden (chengfu) and retribution, political thought and statecraft, and ecological and vitalist philosophy — discussed volume by volume according to historical period, with attention to the interaction with Confucian and Buddhist thought. The work draws extensively on original texts from the Daoist Canon while also adopting the analytical methods of contemporary philosophy and religious studies, giving particular attention to key developments such as Tang-dynasty Chongxuan learning, Song–Yuan Internal Alchemy theories of mind and nature, and the syncretism of the Three Teachings in the Ming and Qing. This work represents the long-accumulated scholarship of Sichuan University's Institute for Daoist and Religious Culture on the study of Daoist thought, and read together with the Zhongguo Daojiao Shi, it offers a complete grasp of the systematic interpretation of Daoist history and thought within Chinese scholarship.
