Synopsis

The Panxi ji (Anthology of Panxi) is a collection of poetry and lyrics by Qiu Chuji (styled Changchunzi), in six juan, containing over five hundred poems, lyrics and eulogies from his ascetic practice at Panxi in Shaanxi and Longmen through his proselytizing in Shandong and up to before his summoned journey west. The works chant of cultivating perfection and awakening to the Dao, and exhort and save the world, while also recording his interactions with the Jin court and with scholar-officials — as in his self-description of ascetic practice, 'no smoke or fire at all, several years at Longmen' — in a clear and forceful style. Prefaces by Yuan Haowen and Zhao Bingwen of the Jin, among others, precede the work, showing Qiu Chuji's reputation among the literati of the Jin. This anthology complements the Changchun zhenren xiyou ji (recorded by Li Zhichang), and is a firsthand historical source for the study of Qiu Chuji's thought and the development of Quanzhen Daoism at the end of the Jin.
