Synopsis

The Selected Daoist Texts Series (Daojiao Dianji Xuankan) is a series of critically collated and annotated Daoist classics published by Zhonghua Book Company, appearing successively since the 1980s, and is the most important series of critical editions of Daoist source texts in the Chinese-speaking world. The series selects important Daoist texts from across the centuries and commissions specialists to provide textual collation, punctuation, annotation and introductions; volumes published so far include Annotated Edition of the Baopuzi Inner Chapters (Wang Ming), Collated Edition of the Taiping jing (Wang Ming), the Yunji qiqian (collated by Li Yongsheng), related editions of the Zhouyi cantong qi kaoyi, the Annotated Zhengao (edited by Yoshikawa Tadao and Mugitani Kunio, translated by Zhu Yueli), the Wuzhen pian, the Zhong-Lü chuandao ji, the Daojiao yishu, the Annotated Shenxian zhuan (Hu Shouwei), and the Nanhua Zhenjing Zhushu, among others. Its value lies in transforming important texts scattered across photolithographic reprints of the Daoist Canon into reliable, readable modern critical editions, complete with collation notes and indices, which have greatly lowered the barrier to research and reading. Together with the critical editions in the Zhonghua Daozang and Shanghai Guji Press's Daojiao Dianji Jingxuan, this series forms the main body of contemporary critical editions of Daoist source texts, and is the preferred version scholars turn to when citing Daoist texts.
